Selling on marketplaces

Online marketplaces by country: where to sell as an online store in Europe

An overview of 72 European marketplaces in 14 countries, for online stores and brands that sell new products. Pick a country to see which marketplaces exist, for which category, and what to arrange before you start.

Short answer

For many European online stores, bol (Netherlands and Belgium) and Kaufland (Germany and other countries) are the easiest places to start. On top of that every country has its own specialist marketplaces, such as MediaMarkt for electronics, Leroy Merlin for DIY and Decathlon for sports. France has the most: 30 that you can connect with StoreLinkr.

Selling as a business, not second-hand items

Looking for a place to sell your own things as a private person? Then you are looking for a classifieds site such as Marktplaats in the Netherlands, 2dehands in Belgium or Kleinanzeigen in Germany, where you make your own deal with the buyer. On 2dehands you state whether you sell privately or as a business, and private sellers do not give buyers a right of withdrawal.1

This page is about online marketplaces for businesses: you list new products with an EAN at a fixed price, the marketplace handles the payment and you ship the order. For that you always need a registered company and a VAT number.

Large marketplaces we do not connect

This page only lists marketplaces you can connect with StoreLinkr today. That is why a few big names are missing:

Platform Country Status at StoreLinkr
Amazon Across Europe Beta, on request
Otto Market Germany Not connected
Zalando Across Europe Not connected (by invitation from Zalando only)
Marktplaats, 2dehands, Kleinanzeigen NL, BE, DE Not connected (classifieds sites)

What do you need to sell in another country?

Every marketplace has its own rules, but these points come back everywhere:

Listings in the local languageTitles, descriptions and customer service in the language of the country. Kaufland, for example, does not allow automatically translated product descriptions.2
VAT through the One-Stop ShopAbove €10,000 a year in sales to consumers in other EU countries, you charge the VAT of your customer's country. The One-Stop Shop lets you declare it in one return.3
Product safety (GPSR)Manufacturer, a responsible person in the EU and safety information with every offer.4
Packaging and wasteSome countries require their own registration, such as LUCID in Germany. You find this on each country page.
14-day right of withdrawalApplies across the EU when consumers buy online.5
Shipping and returnsA carrier that serves the country well and a return address your customer understands.

How to choose the right marketplace

  1. Start close to homeStart in a market whose language you already speak. Selling in the Netherlands or Belgium? Read the guide to selling on bol. Read the guide
  2. Then pick one large countryGermany and France have the most marketplaces. Start with one general marketplace, such as Kaufland.
  3. Add a specialist marketplaceSelling home, sports or electronics products? A specialist marketplace has less competition per product.
  4. Automate before you scaleFrom three sales channels on, keeping stock up to date by hand becomes error-prone. That is the moment to connect your store to your marketplaces.

Frequently asked questions about online marketplaces

Amazon and eBay are active in many countries. On top of that every country has its own big players: bol in the Netherlands and Belgium, Kaufland and Otto in Germany and Allegro in Poland. With StoreLinkr you can connect 72 marketplaces in 14 countries. Amazon is in beta, on request.

Bol is the best known. You can also connect MediaMarkt, Decathlon, Brico, INNO, Books in Belgium and Vente-unique, among others. 2dehands is a classifieds site for private sellers and is not one of them.

Up to €10,000 a year in sales to consumers in other EU countries, you can usually charge your own country's VAT. Above that you charge the VAT of your customer's country, which you declare through the One-Stop Shop (OSS).

Start with one or two. Learn the rules and service standards, then expand. With an integration, an extra marketplace takes little extra work.

Mirakl is the software many marketplaces run on, such as MediaMarkt, Decathlon and Leroy Merlin. You do not sell "on Mirakl" but on the marketplace itself. StoreLinkr connects all of these Mirakl marketplaces through one integration.

Our Amazon integration is in beta and available on request only. Get in touch if you want to join.
