Austrian marketplaces: where to sell as an online store in Austria

If you already sell in Germany, Austria is a logical next step: the same language and many of the same marketplaces. Austria still has its own rules, especially for packaging. Here you find every Austrian marketplace StoreLinkr connects and what to arrange before you start.

Short answer

Amazon has no Austrian site of its own, so Amazon.de serves Austrian shoppers. Kaufland.at, MediaMarkt, XXXLutz (home), Douglas (beauty) and Shop Apotheke are other well known marketplaces. If you sell to Austrian consumers from abroad, you need German listings, GPSR data, a packaging licence and an authorised representative in Austria.

The largest marketplaces in Austria explained

Not every marketplace is open to every seller, and we do not connect every marketplace. Here is what you need to know about each one.

Kaufland.at

Kaufland.at

Connectable General

A broad marketplace for almost every category. You pay one basic fee from €39.95 per month, excluding VAT, for all Kaufland marketplaces together. In Austria you pay a commission of 7 to 16 percent per sale, the same as in Germany.1 Automatically translated descriptions are not allowed.2

MediaMarkt

MediaMarkt

Connectable Electronics

The marketplace of the electronics chain, also active in Germany. If you sell electrical equipment to Austrian end users from abroad, you also appoint an authorised representative for electronics.7

XXXLutz

XXXLutz

Connectable Home and furniture

The marketplace of the Austrian furniture chain. Worth a look for furniture, lighting and home accessories, with complete product data and clear delivery times for bulky items.

Douglas

Douglas

Connectable Beauty

The marketplace of the perfumery chain, for beauty and personal care. If you also sell health products, look at Shop Apotheke.

Amazon.de

Beta, on request General

Amazon has no Austrian site of its own: amazon.at redirects to Amazon.de. Our Amazon integration is in beta and available on request only. Get in touch if you want to join.

Zalando

Not connected by StoreLinkr Fashion

Zalando requires, among other things, a valid 13-digit EAN per item and, if you ship yourself, free shipping and returns within 30 days.3 StoreLinkr does not connect Zalando. For fashion in Austria you can connect Happy Size and limango.

Marketplaces in Austria by category

General marketplaces bring lots of visitors, but also lots of competition. A specialist marketplace has fewer sellers per product and customers who know what they want. So choose based on your range.

What do you need to sell in Austria?

Listings in proper GermanTitles, descriptions and customer service in German. Kaufland does not allow automatically translated descriptions.2
VAT through the One-Stop ShopOnce your sales to consumers in other EU countries exceed €10,000 a year in total, you charge Austrian VAT. The standard rate is 20 percent.8 You can declare it through the One-Stop Shop (OSS).9
Packaging licenceIf you put packaging into circulation in Austria, you join an approved collection and recovery system. You confirm this to your customers, for example on the delivery note or invoice.5
Authorised representative for packagingIf you have no establishment in Austria and sell packaged products at a distance to Austrian consumers, you must appoint an authorised representative (Bevollmächtigter) based in Austria, with a certified power of attorney in German or English.4
Product safety (GPSR)Your offer shows the manufacturer, a responsible person in the EU if the manufacturer is based outside it, and safety information. Without that data a marketplace must not show your offer.10
14-day right of withdrawalYour customer may cancel within 14 days of delivery without giving a reason. Return costs are only for the customer if you said so in advance.11
Representative for electronicsIf you sell electrical or electronic equipment at a distance to end users in Austria, you also appoint an authorised representative for that.7

Marketplaces check this: since 1 January 2023, online marketplaces in Austria must ensure that sellers meet their obligations for packaging, electronics and batteries. If that is not ensured, the marketplace must exclude the seller.6

This is not tax or legal advice. If you are unsure about VAT or registrations, ask your accountant.

Several marketplaces in Austria at once

Every marketplace has its own portal, its own categories and its own rules. With two marketplaces you can still manage by hand. From three on, stock becomes the real risk: if you sell the same product on a marketplace and in your own store, stock has to be right in both places straight away.

StoreLinkr takes products, stock and prices from your online store (WooCommerce, Shopify or SitePack), your POS system or your wholesaler, and puts them on the marketplaces you choose. Orders come back into your store. Per marketplace you set categories, price rules and exclusions.
