Marketplaces in Portugal: where to sell as an online store

Portugal is a smaller market than Spain, but many Spanish marketplaces sell there too. On top of that Portugal has its own players such as Worten. Here you find every marketplace in Portugal StoreLinkr connects and what to arrange before you ship your first order there.

Short answer

Well known marketplaces in Portugal are Worten, El Corte Inglés, MediaMarkt, Decathlon and Leroy Merlin. If you sell from abroad directly to Portuguese consumers, you appoint an authorised representative in Portugal for your packaging. You also need Portuguese listings, product safety information (GPSR) and the right VAT set-up.

The largest marketplaces in Portugal explained

Not every marketplace is open to every seller, and we do not connect every marketplace. Here is what you need to know about each one.

Worten

Worten

Connectable Electronics and appliances

The well known Portuguese chain for electronics and household appliances, with its own marketplace. We connect Worten for Portugal only, which makes it the main difference from the Spanish line-up.

El Corte Inglés

El Corte Inglés

Connectable Department store, broad

The Spanish department store chain is also active in Portugal. If you already sell in Spain, you add Portugal with Portuguese listings. Note that the packaging rules in Portugal differ from those in Spain.

MediaMarkt

MediaMarkt

Connectable Electronics

The marketplace of the electronics chain, which we also connect for Spain, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, among others. If you sell electronics, keep in mind that Portugal also requires an authorised representative for electrical equipment.1

Decathlon

Decathlon

Connectable Sports and outdoor

The marketplace of the sports chain. We connect Decathlon for Portugal, but not for Spain. For sports in Portugal you can also connect Sprinter and Alltricks (cycling).

PcComponentes

PcComponentes

Connectable Electronics and IT

The Spanish IT marketplace has its own Portuguese site. As a seller you decide which territory you sell in and which delivery times you state, and you are responsible for the sale and after-sales service yourself.2

Amazon

Beta, on request General

Our Amazon integration is in beta and available on request only. Get in touch if you want to join and we will check together whether your range is a good fit.

Marketplaces in Portugal by category

General marketplaces bring lots of visitors, but also lots of competition. A specialist marketplace has fewer sellers per product and customers who know what they want. So choose based on your range.

What do you need to sell in Portugal?

Listings in PortugueseTitles, descriptions and customer service in Portuguese. Spanish listings are no substitute, not even on marketplaces that sell in both countries.
Authorised representative for packagingIf you sell from another EU country directly to end users in Portugal, you appoint an authorised representative in Portugal. They register you in SILiAmb, sign the contract with the packaging waste scheme and pay the fees. For packaging this has been mandatory since 1 January 2022.1
Electronics, batteries and tyresThe same duty applies to electrical and electronic equipment (since 1 January 2018), batteries and tyres, among others. You arrange those registrations through your representative too.1
VAT through the One-Stop ShopOnce your sales to consumers in other EU countries exceed €10,000 a year in total, you charge Portuguese VAT and can declare it through the One-Stop Shop (OSS).3 The Azores and Madeira are part of the EU VAT area.4
Product safety (GPSR)Your offer shows the manufacturer, a responsible person in the EU if the manufacturer is based outside it, and safety information. Without that data a marketplace must not show your offer.5
14-day right of withdrawalYour customer may cancel within 14 days of delivery without giving a reason. Return costs are only for the customer if you said so in advance.6
Shipping and returnsPortugal is far away and the islands are further still. Decide per region what you deliver, plan realistic delivery times and give a return address your customer understands.

Spain and Portugal are separate countries for your packaging. A Spanish registration does not cover Portugal. If you sell directly to Portuguese consumers, you need your own authorised representative there.1

This is not tax or legal advice. If you are unsure about VAT or registrations, ask your accountant.

How to start in 6 steps

  1. Pick 1 or 2 marketplacesStart with Worten or El Corte Inglés and one specialist marketplace that fits your range.
  2. Appoint a representativeFind an authorised representative in Portugal for your packaging, and for electronics or batteries if you sell them.
  3. Check your VATAdd up your sales to consumers in other EU countries. If you go over €10,000 a year, register for the One-Stop Shop.
  4. Translate your product dataTitles, descriptions and attributes in proper Portuguese, with an EAN for every product. Have your best sellers checked by someone who speaks Portuguese well.
  5. Complete GPSR dataManufacturer, responsible person in the EU, warnings and manuals. If anything is missing, your offer will not go live.
  6. Connect stock and ordersLet stock, prices and orders sync automatically with your online store, so you never sell what you do not have.

OLX and second-hand: something else

Several marketplaces in Portugal at once

Every marketplace has its own portal, its own categories and its own rules. With two marketplaces you can still manage by hand. From three on, stock becomes the real risk: if you sell the same product on a marketplace and in your own store, stock has to be right in both places straight away.

StoreLinkr takes products, stock and prices from your online store (WooCommerce, Shopify or SitePack), your POS system or your wholesaler, and puts them on the marketplaces you choose. Orders come back into your store. Per marketplace you set categories, price rules and exclusions.
